On Witten’s global anomaly for higher SU(2) representations

چکیده

The integer nj depends on the group representation j, and the theory is ill-defined if nj is an odd integer. Witten showed, invoking an Atiyah-Singer index theorem [2] for a certain five-dimensional Dirac operator (the fifth coordinate is essentially the path parameter t), that nj is odd only for the representations in (1). Besides the fundamental representation with j = 1/2, the representations with j = 5/2, 9/2, etc. also suffer from Witten’s anomaly, while the 3/2 and the remaining half-integer representations, as well as all integervalued representations, are anomaly free. However, the index theorem does not predict nj itself. So we can ask the following question: What is the value of nj as a function of j that causes only half of the half-integer representations to be anomalous?

Global anomalies in Chiral Lattice Gauge Theory

As first realized by Witten an SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a single Weyl fermion suffers from a global anomaly. This problem is addressed here in the context of the recent developments on chiral gauge theories on the lattice. We find Witten’s anomaly manifests in the impossibility of defining globally a fermion measure that reproduces the proper continuum limit. Moreover, following Witten’s o...

Global Anomalies in Chiral Gauge Theories on the Lattice

We discuss the issue of global anomalies in chiral gauge theories on the lattice. In Lüscher’s approach, these obstructions make it impossible to define consistently a fermionic measure for the path integral. We show that an SU(2) theory has such a global anomaly if the Weyl fermion is in the fundamental representation. The anomaly in higher representations is also discussed. We finally show th...

Some Global Aspects of Gauge Anomalies of Semisimple Gauge Groups and Fermion Generations in GUT and Superstring Theories

207 Admiral Lane, Greer, SC 29650 U.S.A. 1 Abstract We study more extensively and completely for global gauge anomalies with some semisimple gauge groups as initiated in ref.1. A detailed and complete proof or derivation is provided for the Z2 global (nonperturbative) gauge anomaly given in ref.1 for a gauge theory with the semisimple gauge group SU(2)× SU(2)× SU(2) in D = 4 dimensions and Weyl...

Matter and singularities

We analyze the structure of matter representations arising from codimension two singularities in F-theory, focusing on gauge groups SU(N). We give a detailed local description of the geometry associated with several types of singularities and the associated matter representations. We also construct global F-theory models for 6D and 4D theories containing these matter representations. The codime...

A ug 2 00 3 Chiral SU ( N ) Gauge Theories and the Konishi Anomaly

We study chiral SU(N) supersymmetric gauge theories with matter in the antifundamental and antisymmetric representations. For SU(5) with two families, we show how to reproduce the non-perturbatively generated superpotential, and we discuss dynamical supersymmetry breaking purely in terms of the Konishi anomaly. We apply the same technique in general to SU(N) with one family. We also briefly com...
